HEALTHY TONE IN MARKET

NOVEMBER PRICES TOO HIGH

Although prices dropped 2d to 2Jd 11 round in comparison with the No-

vember sale, most of the buyers admit that the prices paid last month were above the level of economic stability, and that this time they were very much restricted in their limits. On the whole, the tone was a healthy one, and if the range’ of prices established continued throughout the season they must prove eminently satisfactory to wool-growers as a whole. November showed a rise of 3d to 6d on March prices, and the fall to-day does not represent on the average anything like one half of this increment. Despite the high prices, about 20 per cent of the growers withdrew their offerings, later endeavouring to effects sale with individual buyers. This, however, proved somewhat difficult. * /

Bradford, again was considerably the best buyer, with the Continent buying here and there, and acting with a considerable amount of caution. America, was not prepared to give anything like November prices, and was only seeking wool of good character.—(P.A.) Levin and Co. Messrs Levin and Co., Ltd., who opened the selling yesterday, report:— Our catalogue of 961 bales was an excellent one, comprising wools from Wairarapa, Southern Hawkes Bay, Manawatu, Rangitikei, Wanganui, Main Trunk, Nelson, West Coast and Marlborough. The condition of the wool was good and quite equal to the November sale. During the past week ..there have been many signs of a weaker tone in the markets of the world, London, Bradford, the Argentine and Australia all showing nervousness. The first effects wore witnessed at Napier, and a lower range of prices for to-day’s sale has been expected since the middle of last week. It now seems a pity, for one reason, that,the prices at the November sale were pitched so high. If they had not been so, no one would have been disappointed to-day, for, after all, the bulk of the prices was quite good. Bradford was the main support, and was bidding freely for all grades of wool, but buyers had their limits, which they would not go beyond, as was witnessed frequently in November. The Continent was operating very cautiously for fleece wool, but showed elasticity when any pieces showing quality were being offered. The bulk of the lambs’ wool was too short in staple to attract strong competition, and . the general level for lambs’ wool was disappointing consequently. America was operating, but was evidently not prepared to lift too. largo a quantity, nor to pay too extreme a price. The main changes as compared with November were as follows:— Down wools: Unchanged. Halfbred: Id to- IJd lower. Fine xbd, 46/48’s: 2d to 21 d lower. Med. xbd, 44/46’s: lid to 2Jd lower.
