The fat sheep and lambs sold at the Carterton Show on Wednesday realised about £5OO, or an average of £2 4s per head. Tho commission on the sale goes to the Society. A valuable Southdown ram belonging to Mr Jas. Knight (Feilding) con. traded pneumonia on the way to tho Wairarapa Show, and died on the night of it’s arrival. The Main Trunk express from Auckland to Wellington yesterday morning was delayed between Erna and Pukako owing to a breakdown in the engine. The cause of the aocident was a broken shaft. The engine pulled up with a jerk, and four or five sleepers Were torn up. The passengers received a severe shake, but no serious damage was done. The train was delayed five hours.

Another big eel, weighing 191bs, was caught in Donald’s creek, Greytown, on Saturday, says the “Standard.” This is the second monster caught there within a fortnight.

A poll at Greytown for a loan of £1206 to construct bridges over Abbott's creek and Cox's creek resulted in 48 votes for and 9 against. Only 57 out of a roil of 363 took sufficient interest to vote.

The_ first Wellington city footpaths to be bitumen-surfaced arc those in front of the Theatre De Luxe in Kent Terrace and Majoribanks street. It is stated that bitumen hot-mix makes an ideal walking surface, having more resilience than concrete, but slabs of the latter material are preferred in cases where disturbances are likely to occur owing to the presence of water

or gas mains. A Wellington city councillor who has returned from the Municipal Conference at Auckland said he came away with the impression that it was rushed through at too great a speed, and that many important questions involved in remits could have been given a great deal more earnest consideration with profit to the whole of the Dominion. “Occasionally there are subjects that want thinking out, and which may be elucidated hy an airing, but very little of that sort of thing took place,” he said.

A noticeable feature at the Wairarapa show was the unusual lack of applause from the grandstand. The ring exhibits were of a high order, as most of the competitors were en route to the Royal Show. In spite of much skilful horsemanship the stand expressed only feeble interest; the ladies’ championship jump elicited a few thrilled murmurs, but the large crowd seemed to be afraid of expressing itself. It takes many weeks to prepare a horse for a modern show, and lack of appreciation is apt to damp the enthusiasm of the most ardent exhibitor.
