RUGBY LEAGUE.
AUCKLAND PROVINCE BEATEN.
BY ENGLISH TOURISTS. Auckland, July 30.—The English League team defeated Auckland province by 28 to 13. The ground was rather soft in places, but the ball was dry and conditions favoured the visiters’ open, passing game. For a considerable time the provincial forwards got among the opposing backs and buokc up their combination. The first score went to Auckland, as the result of snappy passing, but the visitors eventually got their back machine moving and try getting was easy for a time. The spell was very strenuous, and each side added 8 points, but in general play the province had rather the better of matters. They were attacking hard at the finish.
A feature of the game was the scrum work of the provincial forwards. They were better at hooking than the visitors and the local backs got a good share of the ball. AVithin seven minutes of the start, as the result of a passing rush, Brisbane scored an unconverted try. Then for England, Gronow kibked a penalty and Rix scored, Gronow converting. This was followed immediately by G. Howley scoring for Gronow to convert. Darwell scored an unconverted try and for Auckland Dufty kicked a penalty. Just before half ttime Gronow scored and converted. 20—5.
In the second spell the scorers were for Auckland Johnston and Delgrosso, Dufty converting the first. For England Rix and Price scored, Gronow converting the last try. —(P.A.)
