SOUTH WAIRARAPA ITEMS. (Our Travelling Reporter.) Gas v. Electricity. In a statement presented to the Carterton Borough Council on Tuesday evening it was shown that the revenue of the gas department had receded from £393 17s 3d in June of last year to £264 13s 9d for the corresponding month this year. Passing it on. At the Carterton Borough Council meeting on Tuesday evening it was suggested that the tradespeople should contribute towards the insurance of the members of the Fire Brigade against accident. Cr*. Broadbent contended that it was unfair that holders of vacant sections should be called upon to contribute. Cr. Churchill pointed out that if the tax fell upon tradespeople they would pass it on to the general public, so it amounted to the same thing. Changing Hands. It is understood that the Greytown Hotel has again changed hands. Vote of Condolence. At the Carterton Borough Council meeting on Tuesday evening a vote of condolence was passed to the relatives of the late Sir Walter Buchanan. The Mayor (Mr W. Fisher) commented upon the keen interest the deceased always took in local body matters, and stated that his loss would be keenly felt. Miniature RiflesIn a match fired between the Kahutara and Greytown Clubs the latter won by 985 points to 984. Visiting Australia. Mr and Mrs J. Jamieson, of South Carterton, leave next week on a trip to Australia. Patching Operations. The Greytown-Waiohine road is at present being patched. On the Grey- » town-Featherston road a man is engaged with a shovel filling up the potholes which are churned out by the motor traffic as quickly as they are filled. Getting On. Mr J. Vicary, of Featherston, celebrated his 90th birthday on Tuesday, when he received the congratulations of a large number of friends. Building Permits. Building permits to the value of £750 were issued by the Carterton Borough Council last month.
