ART IN WELLINGTON.

THE DOMINION MUSEUM. CITY WAKING UP. Wellington, May 9. —At the opening of the annual sketch exhibition of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts the chairman (Mr E. W. Hunt) said the Government had offered £75,000 for the Dominion Museum if the Wellington citizens raised a similar sum. It was now proposed to ask the Government to extend the proposal and give up to £lOO,OOO if Wellington contributed a like amount. Mr Hunt stated that Sir Harold Beauchamp last year had given a property worth the capital value of which it was hoped would be £lO,OOO, the interest thereon to bo used to purchase pictures. Now Sir Harold had declared that if a serious effort was made to raise £lOO,OOO he would head the first £5OOO. Mr Hunt said he believed that Wellington was stirring up.—(P.A.)
