THE SAILORS’ VISIT.
LETTER OF THANKS. FROM VICE-ADMIRAL FIELD. From Vice-Admiral Sir Frederick Field, commanding the Special Service Squadron, the Mayor of Masterton (Mr O. N. C. Pragnell) has received the following letter: — H.M.S. “Hood.” at Wellington, May 7, 1924. Sir, — • Before leaving Wellington I wish, on behalf of the officers and men of the Special Service Squadron, to thank you, your fellow citizens, and the ladies and gentlemen who assisted you in the wonderful welcome which you extended to the officers and men of the Squadron, who, at your invitation, visited Masterton. I was especially glad that some members of my staff were able to pay a very brief visit to Masterton, who, besides being kindly entertained, had an opportunity of seeing the most generous entertainment which was provided for the large party of petty officers and men of the Squadron who visited Masterton. on Monday, May 5. These officers were most impressed by adl.thoy saw, and they informed me that the entertainment arranged in your magnificent Town Hall could not have been excelled. I was very interested in the souvenir menus which were given to each man and which will be a very happy reminder of the visit. I understand that the petty officers and men who formed this party could not have enjoyed themselves more, and they were especially grateful for the arrangements which were made for everyone of them to go for a 20-mile drive by motor cht into the country. I have the honour to be, Sir, Your obedient servant, F. FIELD; Vice-Admiral Commanding Special Service Squadron.
