KONINI BRIDGE.
UNSAFE FOR TRAFFIC. TO BE REBUILT. Built fully 48 years, the traffic bridge, on the main road, near the Konini butter factory, school and post office, is in a dangerous state, says the “Pahiatua Herald.” Cr. J. D. Matthews recalled at the meeting of the Pahiatua County Council, the period when the bridge was built. He assisted to haul the timber from the bush, while Cr. 8. Bolton also recollects the early construction. Twentyfive years ago, when Mr Tom Verry, of Konini, went to school, the bridge was then labelled “Unsafe for Traffic.” It has occasionally been patched up since. A deputation of 10 settlers waited upon the council and strongly urged the erection of a new bridge. Mr M. Alpass stressed the great hardship that would ensure to the settlers if the bridge should collapse. With recent re-valuation of their properties, it was very desirable that settlers should get the utmost returns from their land, and they all knew what a vital link the bridge was to the district. The chairman said the scheme had the approval of the District Highways Board and the District Engineer, and it had to be submitted to the approval of the Main Highways Board. Mr D. Kelly, a resident of Konini for over 30 years, said it would prove very detrimental to the Konini factory if the bridge collapsed. The chairman assured the deputation that everything would be done to expedite the matter. It was decided to obtain plans for the erection of a new bridge at Konini and also for the small bridge near Mr Alpass’s property.
