SETTLED AT LAST.

A USELESS PENSION. SWALLOWED UP IN TAXES. Paris, May 7.—A 25-year-old dispute between the late Empress Eugenie and the French Government has been settled. The Empress in 1899 was awarded 2,287,000 francs from the Imperial civil list, but the money was not paid, and it is now due to the Empress’s heiress, Princess Marie, the 12-year-old daughter of Prince Victor Napoleon.

As the death duties and transfer fees amount to 41 million francs, Princess Marie waived all claims, provided that the State gives her the Napoleonic sword and the clock which was the property of Queen Hortense.—(A. and N.Z.)
