SOLWAY SCHOOL.
HEADMASTER’S REPORT. The headmaster presented the following report for the year ended April 30. Attendance and Roll.—The school has maintained its numbers, the present roll being 103; the average roll has been 102, and the average attendance 93, this being 91 per cent of the roll. AVith one or two individual exceptions, the attendance has been very good, and there has been little sickness. On the present roll and staffing, our school is entitled to an addition al room; if the roll number were to increase by another 10 or 20, the tional room; if the roll number were us what is our right. Examinations.— Educationally, tue year has been a very successful one, very few children failing to secure promotion into a higher class. In the proficiency examination, 7 children obtained proficiency, 2 competency and one failed. During the year the following improvements and additions have been carried out: —Erection of bicycle shed, metalling of drive, top-dressing of cricket pitch, garden improvements, purchase of lawn mower and roller, additional shelving in classrooms, cupboard and office, purchase of gramaphone and records, shelving to hold 100 records. The school buildings, generally, arc in good order, and are clean and attractive inside. The roof, however, requires attention. The Board has several times promised to attend to it, but so far nothing has been done. Outside activities. —The school has again taken an active part in outside games, teams entering for the competitions in basketball, football, and cricket. The school also entered for th© children’s chorus in the Masterton competitions and camea off first prize. A successful concert was held in. December. The net proceeds amounted to £26 17/5, which was expended on a gramaphone. The school picnic, in March, favoured by ideal weather, was exceptionally well-at-tended by parents and friends. Much of the success of these outside activities has been due to the whole-hearted manner in which the committee and parents have assisted the staff. In conclusion, I wisn to thank the retiring committee for their kindly interest and assistance in the smooth working of the school; there have been many demands on their time and labour, and these have been met unstlntingly, and often at very considerably sacrifice. I also desire to again thank
