SPORTING NOTES.
When the rumour got around that Rapine, had been “doped” on the morning of the Cumberland Stakes he quickly receded in the netting, and the son of Martian drifted to a good “price,” but evidently some well-in-formed persons did not take much notice of the rumour as a big parcel of money was “placed” and won at the long price. The jumper Carawoek has left for Sydney accompanied by Peach Brandy. Of the pair Carawoek appears to be most likely to pay expenses. When Chrysostom fell on the opening day of the A.J.C. meeting he gave the cx-New Zealander, Stan. Reid, a bad fall, and severe facial cuts. Although Razzlc Dazzle has shown in and out form, she is undoubtedly a good filly, and apart from her victory over Gloaming at the Canterbury meeting she has the distinction of having beaten those three great performers Glcntruin, Tamatete and The z Hawk when they were at their best in the Waterloo Stakes at Trentham.
Good horseman as Roy Reed undoubtably is, outside of Rapine the New Zealand rider did not have a mount on the first two days of the Australian Jockey Club’s meeting. Possibly most of the riders were, engaged before it was assured that Reed would be making the trip. Instead of the Wellington Racing Club making a handsome profit over the Fleet meeting, they will be lucky if there is not a loss instead. The club expected to put about £60,000 through the totalizator, but owing to the strike and bad weather only £28,000 went through. Advice from the South states that J. MeCombe will take Sunny Loch, Geranial and The Cheat to Sydney.
j First Line, which won the Wanganui Steeplechase and the Wellington Steeplechase in 1920, and captured the Hawke’s Bay Steeplechase last year, is evidently anything but a spent light yet, for he just failed to withstand the challenge of Dick in the concluding stages of the steeplechase at Trentham. He is rising eleven now. Chimera will probably be retired from racing, and bred to Arrowsmith next season. Chimera shares the honours with The Hawk in holding the Australasian record for six furlongs in 1.9 4-5. Chimera was foaled in 1914, and is somewhat late in retiring to the paddock.
Star Shell, the two-year-old trained by F. Quinlivan at Trentham, which ran well at the Wairarapa meeting, recently changed hands, and is now owned by Mr. H. P. F. Blundell. In the juvenile event at the Fleet meeting held at Trentham he made his first appearance in his new own’er’s colours.
