SOUTH WAIRARAPA ITEMS. (Our Travelling Reporter.) Trotting. Nominations for the South Wairarapa Trotting Club’s meeting, to be held on the Clareville course on June 3, close with the secretary (Mr A. L. Webster) at Greytown on May 10. Good. Investment. Since investing in a Fordson tractor the Featherston County Council has transformed the main road out of all recognition in double quick time. Yesterday the Greytown-Waio-hine road was graded and travelling made much more comfortable for motorists. Basketball. Playing at Carterton on Saturday, Greytown primary defeated Carterton by 17 to 15, and Greytown secondary won by 8 to 6. At Papawai. Twenty-one candidates were presented at the confirmation service at the Papawai Maori pa on Sunday. The Bishop of Wellington (Dr. Sprott) was assisted by the Revs. W. G. Williams and Patikano Kokiri. The visitors were afterwards entertained at luncheon by the Maoris. Special Meeting. A special meeting of the Grey town Borough Council is to be held this evening to meet a deputation from the sports bodies and to deal with the Main Highways Act. » Croquet. i.
The Greytown Croquet Club officially closed its greens for the season on Saturday. Unfavourable weather prevented play, but afternoon tea was The club won the inter-club B Shield, which was a creditable performance considering the short time the club has been in existence. Club championships were won during the season as follows;—A, Mrs Stevens; B, Mrs Anker; club doubles, Mrs Gregor and Miss Wyett. 3 Queen Carnival.
Something special is offered patrons of the Carterton Tivoli Theatre this evening, when, in addition to a picture programme, a concert party from Featherston, headed by Mrs Nellie Fieldhouse, will perform on behalf of the School Queen candidate. Long-felt Want.
The annual report of the Greytown School Committee contained the following:—The long-felt want of an additional playing area has at last been provided through the generosity of Mrs Bey,; who kindly surrended a two years’ lease of the land adjoining the school propery which was purchased by the Committee three years ago. The new ground is much appreciated by the children and will be a boon during the coming winter. A portion of the new ground was prepared for mangold growing to enable the pupils to enter a competition arranged by the Farmers’ Union at the instigation of Mr J. Meikle, who has given assistance and advice, good work has been done, the plot looking very well indeed.
