Mr 8. Corlett has been elected county councillor for the West Riding of the Eketahuna County. Mr H. L. Wilson, headmaster oi? the Martinborough District High School, is visiting Christchurch. Constables Fisher (Pongaroa) and Dumphy (Ashhurst, and formerly of Alasterton) have exchanged positions. Air H. J. H. Blow, 1.5.0., who has been visiting his daughter, Mrs L. CLaike (Essex street) left for Napier yesterday.
The Rev. W. Bullock, Vicar of Masterton, leaves on Monday to attend the Anglican Congress at Christchurch.
Mr F. Hargreaves, Auckland, judge of the elocutionary sections of the competitions, arrived in Alasterton yesterday and is staying at the Midland.
■Mr Tom Driver, who went to Wanganui with the Masterton Amateur Theatrical Society committee to see the amateurs stage “Floradora,” has been unable to return home owing to illness. Air W. A. Swinburne, who has been appointed headmaster of the Lansdowne School, is at present headmaster at Waitara, Taranaki. Before going to Taranaki he was headmaster of the Crofton and Alarton Junction combined schools.
Mr L. M. Fairbrother (Maharahara) has been appointed by the Taranaki Education Board to be special assistant in charge of the supplementary model school, attached to the Stratford Primary School. The school will be opened about June 1, with 30 pupils selected from the Stratford school.
A vote of thanks was unanimously passed by the Wairarapa Provincial Executive of the Farmers’ Union yesterday, to the secretary, (Air D. Hebenton) for his services during the year. Speaking to the adoption oi the balance sheet, Mr Ross said it was entirely due to Mr Hebenton’s careful check on expenditure that the Executive could produce 'such a satisfactory credit. The following delegates from the Wairarapa will attend the Provinicial conference of the Farmers’ Union at Palmerston North next week:—J. Cross (Tiraumea), H. N. Kebbell (Alfredton), A. Hughan (Eketahuna), J. Petersen (Nireaha), T. it. Barrer and C. C. Jackson (Masterton), T. Anderson and H. W. Kempton (Carterton), J. Meikle (Greytown), A. E. Roberts (Featherston), A. Ross (Gladstone), Harold Bennett (Tinui), and D. Hebenton, Provincial secretary. The death occurred on Wednesday of Mr Vivian Higgins, first assistant master at the Petone Boys’ High School, and formerly a lieutenant in the Alachine Gun Company, N.Z.E.F. Air Higgins was 45 years of age, and had been in the service of the Wellington Education Board for nearly 27 years. He was formerly on the staff of the Carterton school, and was well known in connection with Wairarapa Rugby football matter. Highly popular and esteemed by al! who knew him, the late Air Higgjns was a member of the Masonic craft, and -when he was stationed in Carterton was a member of Lodge St. Mark. He was also an Oddfellow, and formerly belonged to the Loyal Eketahuna Lodge.
