PERSONAL.

Mr W. Pony, “Penrose,” is visiting Wellington. Mr D. M. Mclntosh, postmaster of Tauranga, and Mrs Mclntosh, who have been visiting Masterton, left yesterday for the south. Mr A. E. Hounscll, postmaster at Masterton, is at present away on leave at. Wanganui. He is being relieved by Mr A. Shelton (Wellington). At the meeting of the Tararua Power Board, Mr J. D. Wilson, Mayor of Pahiatua-,- was elected chairman by 6 votes to 4 over Mr Carruthers. Mr Hugh Burrell has resigned the chairmanship of the Feilding Farmers’ Freezing Company, and Mr John Cobbe has been elected to succeed him. Mr E. A. Ransom, M.P., was reelected chairman of the Dannevirke Power Board. The honorarium was fixed at £2OO, to include ordinary travelling expenses. Major John Whitney, who is now in his, 87th year, has made ten trips to England since settling in Auckland in 1885. This week he again set out for London. At the Opotiki County Council special mention was made of the retirement of the Hon. J. B. Gow, M.L.C., who had served within a few 7 months of 30 qears on the council. At the outset the whole county was roadless.

Miss Esther Fisher, the young New Zealand pianist, who is giving a recital in London shortly, has been studying ith Philippe, of the Paris Conservatoire Nationale. She is the daughter of Mr F. M. B. Fisher, an ex-Cabinet Minister in New Zealand.

The following officers of the Camera Club have been elected:—President, Mr E. W. Pay ton; vice-presidents, Dr. Archer Hosking, Messrs J. Henderson and H. R. Gibbs; committee, Mrs B. Welch, Miss N. Kendall, and Messrs L A. Henderson and A. Renall; librarian, Mr R. H. D. Stidolph; auditor, Mr G. L. Thomas; hon. secretary and treasurer, Mr R. H. D. Stidolph.

The Australian Cable Service learns that there is a likelihood of the Duke of York being appointed GovernorGeneral of New Zealand, in succession to Admiral Lord Jellicoe. It is pointed out that New Zealand is the best training ground for a novice to gain experience, since it does not possess the possibilities of constitutional compliactions like the Dominions composed of federated pelf-governing States. Following are the new office-bearers of the Pahiatua R.S.A.:—President, Dt. H. Paterson (re-elected); vice-pre-sident, Mr C. E. Bee; secretary, Mr H. A. Bick; executive committe, Messrs W. G. Callender (Makomako), P. A. Bisset (Konini), P. R. Boagey (Pahiatua), S. G. Ramsay (Mangarama), C. H. Wilton (Ballance), L. V. Russell (Hamua), C. Guerin (Kaitawa), J. W. Greaves (Mangatainoka). Mr D. H. Black, M.Sc. (Nelson), has had the good fortune to be accepted by Sir Ernest Rutherford as a research student at the Cavendish Laboratory

at Cambridge University. Like Sir Ernest Rutherford himself, Mr Black is the son of a Nelson farmer, and was educated at Nelson College, taking his university course at Canterbury College. He has been on the teaching staff of the Boys’ High School at Christchurch.

The Rev. Alexander Doull, M.A., who died at Dunedin, was until recently minister in chrge of the Presbyterian Church at Palmerston North. Born at Feltar. Shetland Islands, he came to New Zealand as an infant. He graduated M.A. at Otago University and completed h\s theological studies at Edinburgh. During his ministry he was in charge of Rangiora, Papatoetoe and Palmerston North. He leaves a widow and family.

Mr H. Chote, one of the best-known settlors of Tipapakuku, died at Whakarara, H.B. He had been engaged with the Crown Lands Ranger valuing property at Wakarara. Mr Chote arrived in Wellington whpn a boy with his parents (who subsequently settled at Herbertville) over 40 years ago. He was best known in connection with the Dannevirke Repatriation Committee and the Dannevirke branch of the Hawkes Bay War Relief Association.
