SAFETY FIRST.

There is likely to be a fuming rage 1 amongst the passengers by the Makura I at being sent to quarantine on account of the outbreak of “alastrim,” but the New Zealand public will not feel disposed to quarrel with the port health authorities about it. We had I never heard of “alastrim” before, but we arc quite willing to judge it by its company. It is stated to be a mild form of smallpox, and that is enough reason for New Zealand to take the j very greatest precautions against its ■ introduction. The port of Auckland is especially open to receive infected ships from oversea, and its past experience should make it very cautious in handling them. A few hours delay ( in the delivery of mails is a small price to pay for security against the introduction of any epidemic disease.
