WEST VERSUS EAST.
A MATTER OF FOOTPATHS The Works Committee recommended to the Masterton Borough Council on Tuesday, that th© portion of footpath from the corner of Pownall and Ronall streets on the East side, to the first High School entrance, be formed in readiness for tarring next season. Cr. Russell took strong exception, eveything being given to the West side of the town. It did not matter, he said, if a house or bungalow’ or a whare was built on the West side of the town, anything that was required was readily given to them. On the other hand the residents of the other end of the town, especially Kuripuni, were always told that there was no money available to do this work and they must do it out ot loan money.
Cr. Kemp said the committee had been dubious about doing the work, but it had been decided after discussing it from every aspect, to do only the portion from the corner. The Mayor: There are 240 children using it every day.
Cr. Russell: Ves, and making a bicycle track of it. This move will give them further encouragement to do so. Cr. Peterson considered that Afasterton should be proud of its High School and the Council should give the school every chance to develop. Cr. Remp: 1 believe that in the near future, perhaps during our term of office, every footpath in the borough will be tarred, though the engineer says that all the asphalt footpaths will have to be re-tarred shortly. The recommendation was adopted.
