“THE SENTIMENTAL BLOKE.” It is a well known fact that Mr C. J. Denniss refused many requests for permission to dramatise his famous “Sentimental Bloke.” He felt that if anyone could put stage dialogue into the months of the Bloke and Doreen, Ginger Mick, the Stror ’at Coot, and the rest of the bunch, he should be that man. Masterton is to see the result of his effort as. a playwright on Monday next at the Opera House. The “Sentimental Bloke” has proved the most distinctive Australian comedy-drama yet written, retaining the strong human touch and hint of pathos that made the Bloke of the verses and the film beloved of the world. Mr Denniss prefers to gay no more about his play than this “I have tried to make the Bloke and his friends live; Mr Carroll gave me carte blanche in the casteing of the play, and I am satisfied that each man and woman who steps on to the stage is the perfect realisation of my own idea of the characters.” The box plan will open at the Bristol next Friday. Dorothy Phillips is the star of the production and Allen Holubar, the creator of ‘ ‘Man—Woman—Marriage,’’ produced it. There are many thrilling and novel feature in “Hurricane’s Cal.” Schooners, torpedo boat destroyers, aeroplanes and hydroplanes are utilised in the production. Most of the action takes place at sea, and the tale ends up in a palatial mansion in San Francisco following a series of underworld complications. The supports are good. “FOOLISH WIVES.” The gorgeous scenes of Monte Carlo’s crowded cafes have been made all the more interesting in. so much as the millionaires of San Francisco lent their services, their beautiful automobiles and gowns to the Universal Company. In return for the time they gave to the Universal Company an amount of money was set aside as a liberal contribution to a San Francisco charity. We learn that no picture has created more curiosity and excitement in Los Angeles and San Francisco than did “Foolish Wives,” during its production. It is certainly most unusual for the elite people of California to allow themselves to be photographed in film productions and their support should indicate the worthiness of Universal’s masterpiece. This stupendous attraction commences at the Opera House to-morrow (Wednesday) evening. Patrons are advised to book early.
