AMERICA’S NAVY.
BUILDING PROGRAMME. 1 i ON LINES OF WASHINGTON TBHATY. (Received 9.30 p.m.) New York. March 12. — The “World’s” Washington correspondent says: —The Navy Department will ask Congress for an appropriation for the construction of six, possibly eight, fast , cruisers of 10,000 tons, carrying 8-inch guns, and three mine-layii g and three scout submarines of 2500 tons, in order to round out the navy under the 5-5-3 treaty ratio. Mr Roosevelt (Assistant Secretary to the Navy) declares that, although tho Naval General Board stressed the r.ecesity for 16 such cruisers arid 12 each of submarines in order to give the United States parity of auxiliary craft with Britain and Japan, the Navy Department would only ask for an appropriation for a small part o’ 1 : this programme during next Congress. — (A. and N.Z.) •
