MASTERTON RACES.

SOM E ANTICIPATIONS

Good acceptances have been received for the Masterton races to bo held on the Opaki course to-morrow and Saturday and some good racing should be witnessed. The train arrangements suit racing patrons from both north and south, while, a continuous motor service will ho available for -Masterton residents. The officials have catered well for patrons ahd there should be a large attendance on both days. The chief event on the first day is the Mastertoll Cup, 1 mile ami 3

furlongs, in which several N.Z. Cup candidates are engaged. As the winner will incur no penalty for the big Riccarton handicap the race should prove an exciting one, in which form must play a prominent part. Insurrection, the brown gelding by Kilbroney, from Ruthful, has been given no liberties b‘v the .handicapper, though, if tuned up, this good handicap horse will carry the weight and put up fast time. Scion IS a useful sort, though probably not forward enough. The Boniform 'mare Bonnetter, won in Hawkes Bay recently and will probably be the popular fancy. Festivity is well seasoned, though hardly class enough for those higher up in the weights. Bonnie Heather has proved disappointing so tai this season. The Heather Mixture gelding, however, is not a dud and may be just forward enough to strike a win. Bitters must rim a good race and of the three light weights Matatua is the best. The placed horses will probably be Insurrection. Bonnetter and Bitters.

Dainty Step won the Flving Handicap last year and if well the big black daughter of Lucullus may repeat the performance. Dainty Step, like Maiolia, is getting up in and both may find the younger division too fast. The aristocraticbred Royal Box will claim the greatest attention and should give investtors a good run for their money. Ambitous is well and may set tlie field a merry .pace. A furlong further would suit the consistent Probate. The order past the post may be Ambitious, Royal Box and Dainty Step. The light weight Kikini mav upset the pot. The Lawn Handicap looks a gift for the Tauherenikau trained Zouave. Lady Ben and Te Kuri will be close up. On recent rusning Kyoto reads v-el. for the High-weight Handicap. Admiration and Projector may get into place money. Merry Day is bound to be sent out favourite for the Lansdowne Handicap, but will have to go some to keep ahead of the fast-finishing Deroulede. Elotlienes is in with a bandv weight. The most open race seems to be tne Grandstand Handicap, in which Chimera is top weight. It looks as if Martian Miss may score. Tiiipairu and Chimera, will be close handy. The Farewell Handicap, or “Recovery Stakes,’’ is not a strong field and there may lie a big dividend. If reserved for this race Deroulede will take a power of beating. Pillage and Glenropo are a likely pair. If Vitelhi gets a good run she may do the trick.

There is a field of 14 in the Trial Stakes, and it is probable that The Linnet, Kilbird and the SblferinoRaid filly may be expected to show prominently.
