Mr A. Caselberg, Mr F. C. Tumor (Eketahuna), Mr V. Donald, Mr H. Williams, and Mr W. S. Jago attended the opening of the W.F.C.A.’s new building at Pahiatua on Saturday.

An expression of sympathy with Mr C. Stagpoole (formerly of Masterton), who is at present in delicate health, is contained in the annual report of the -Manawatu Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club. The Rev. T. A. Joughin, chairman for the North Canterbury district of the Methodist Church, is seriously indisposed in Auckland at , present. The Rev. W. Ready has been appointed acting chairman by the Methodist Conference. The following appointments of teachers have been made by the Wellington Education Board :—Pahiatua (sole teacher), Miss N. J. M. Orr; Kaitoke, Miss Jessie Jacobs; Putara, Mr S. M. Hancox; Masterton District High School (second assistant), Miss W. M. Hunt.

The Rev. G. K. Aitken, of Featherston. clerk to the Wairarapa Presbytery, has received a telegraphic message from the Oamaru Presbytery staging that the Rev. J. Davie, of Palmerston South, had accepted the call to the Masterton Knox Church. The ordination will take

place on November 90. From GO applicants, Mr James Bain, of Wellington, has been appointed to succeed Mr C. J. Carlyon as secretary to the Featherston Cooperative Dairy Company. The new secretary will be located in offices at the factory and will be required to devote the whole of his time to the company’s work.

The Prime Minister of Australia (Mr Hughes) celebrated his 58th birthday the other day. He was born on September 25, 1864, in a part of Wales populated almost exclusively by the Hughes, Lloyd and Williams families, and went to Australia at the age of 20. He entered the New South Wales State Parliament in 1894, and has been 28 years in politics, seven in the State and 21 in the Federal Parliament. The Hon. John Jacob* Astor, the 4-year-old son of Viscount Astor and Viscountess Astor. M.P.. will benefit to the extent of more than £416.000 as the result of an order of the New York Supreme x’ourt. The money represents the boy’s share in the trust of nearly £5,000,000 created by his grandfather, the late ViMBOUnt Astor, for certain of his children and grandchildren. It will be handed over ; n the. form of securities to Lord Astor as the infant's guardian. The death occurred yesterday, at his residence, 26 Wrigley street, Masterton. of Mr Alex.McLay, after a long illness. The late MrMcLay was born in the Clutha district, ‘Otago, 58 years ago, and was the second son of the late Mr W. McLay, one of the earliest settlers in the Clutha district. Deceased possessed a genial nature, which made for him a host of friends. A widow (a daughter of Mr G. C. Bennington) is left to mourn her loss, and she will have the sympathy of a wide circle of friends in her bereavement. Deceased was a member of the Masterton A. and P. Association, and was actively associated with the North Island Collie Dog Trials Association.
