HARRIER NOTES.

(By “Spike.”) Keen interest’ 7 ’ ie being taken at present throughout the district m every department of sport. Rugby is coming into its own again, track running has had a helping hand from the recent visit of the Springbok athletes, and likewise cross-country running has imbued all those connected with it, since its resuscitation last season, with an enthusiasm which promises not to wane. Several young performers have been making anxious enquiries regarding the sport, with the •result that the committee decided to hold the annual meeting a week earlier than it was arranged for. A brief review of last season’s work may provide interest to the many supporters of this popular e-port. The Club was reorganised late in the season, nevertheless, much good work was done, 18 runs being held. Three cross-country races were held, the winner s being A. Graham, V. Spackman, and J. Hunter and R. S. Graham (dead heat). A five-mi les handicap road-race was also held, being won by T. Ryan, with A. Graham second. Mr J. Bradbury cross-country champion), the judicious club-captain, gave every satisfaction, his popularity winning for him the respect of the “pack.” He proved an efficient instructor to the “freshmen.” The hospitality for which the people of the Wairarapa are renowned was not found wanting, the following supporters generously entertaining the runners. Messrs A. P. Whatman, G. Shaw, E. Harper, T. Wyeth, F. Evans and A. Narbey. The most essential position in the club, that of trail-layers, was capably 1 filled by Messrs R. S. Graham, H. ■ Peters and J. Bradbury, jufir. 1 A suggestion is afoot this season - to form an A and B “pack.” This will enable young enthusiasts to rei ceive their primary education at the : hands of an experienced instructor, i- and to compete with other runners of about their own ability. Last > season the same few were always seen I tailing the field, whereas if the B > grade scheme had been in operation I there would liave been some interest- ' ing competition and everyone probably : would have secured a place, some : time during the season. I The Brooklyn Harriers hold tlhe ’ Whyte-McKay Shield. Masterton L won the shield 10 years ago, and have j every possibility of doing so again. It rests with the supporters of the > finest of outdoor sports whether this - objective is attained in the forthcom- ■ ing season. : The annual general meeting will be held in the Y.M.C.A. rooms on Mon--1 day, at 7.30 p.m.
