MAORI VITALITY.
The census figures indicate very definitely the fact that the Maori race in New Zealand has turned the corner and is showing an increase in numbers. The fear that they would disappear altogether within a generation or tw-o now seems to be past, especially if they adopt more vigorously the salvation-by-work doctrine of the Hon. Mr Ngata. To judge by the sports at Solway on Saturday they have already adopted that doctrine in the field of sport. The Maori contingent, fro”. Homewood and elsewhere, put up a very creditable performance in horsemanship and other events, and gave the pakeha competitors a strenuous task, to got even a fair share of the laurels. It is a pity sufficient Maoris cannot bo found together this winter to put a senior football team in the field. The part taken by the natives in pakeha sports must be gratifying to everyone who has the interests of the race at heart.
