WELLINGTON WOOL SALE

BUYERS 810 FREELY

CROSSBREDS REALISE INCREASED PRICES

At yesterday’s sale the catalogues toalled a Ittlo over 19,000 bales, of which it is estimated fully 85 per cent found buyers under the hammer. The bulk of the passed in wool will doubtless be disposed of during the next few days, if owners feel disposed to meet the market by reducing their reserves. There was a good attendance of buyers representing all sections cl' the trade, bidding was brisk trom first to last, and the sale closed with a very firm tone. The outstanding feature of the sale was the all-round interest shown in low crossbreds 36/40’s, which appreciated to the extent of Jd for super and average lots, and from Id to Id per lb for inferior. Lambs’ wool of good fine quality was largely taken by New Zealand woollen mills at about February rates, but coarse grades of good quality and seedy lots, of which there was a fairly large quantity offered, was only saleable at low rates. French representatives were interested only in the superior lots. Bellies and pieces of good quality were in demand for France and good crutehings for Japan. Low prices had to be accepted lor seedy bellies, pieces, and crutehings. RANGE OF PRICES.

N.Z. LOAN AND MERCANTILE /' AGENCY CO., LTD. We cleared the bulk of our catalogue under the hammer, but had to pass a proportion owing to owners’ inflated ideas of values. The London March series of sales opened on the 7th inst., with prices lower by 5 to 10 pet cent than last closing rates, but as the sales progressed a firming up has taken place, until latest advices record prices of most grades on a level with February rates. Merino and half bred were easier to-day by Jd to lid per lb; I medium and coarse crossbred, 40/44’s. were about the same prices as those ruling in February, but super medium trossbred was par to Id per lb lower Spring Dale, 1 bale er. Lt- 1 . We he'd our fourth sale of the season to-day, the usual bench of buyers being present. Our catalogue had 'rt-’n'in'r I't«. Comr.c'liti »«s keen throughout the sale, an-l

except where handicapped with high reserves from growers, a good clearance was effected. Prior to the sale, in sympathy with the opening of the London sale, a drop was expected by quite a number, and we are pleased to be able to report that, with the exception of average and inferior halfbred and super crossbreds suitable for America, of which very few were offering, this was not borne out. In fact, low and c oarse crossbreds, which comprised most of the catalogue,'-were firmer, showing a rise of £d, and in some cases |d. Inferior pieces and lambs were hard to quit. Following are a few of our sales: —Ellaston, 4 bales crossbred 4d; Glenrowan, 23 crossbred E sd; Hinau, 4 crossbred 4fd; Waireri, 17 crossbred E sfd, 21 crossbred E 4£d, 13 crossbred H 4|, 4 crossbred H 4fd; Temunga, 9 crossbred H 4id, 4 crossbred W 4 crossbred H 4fd, 6 crossbred E 4|d, 12 crossbred E 4|; Waratah, 5 Lincoln cross 4 |d, 3 Romney cross s£d; Wairangi, 16 crossbred s|d, 4 crossbred 4|d. DALGETY AND CO. Messrs Dalgety and Co., Ltd., report :—The fourth sale of the series was held in Wellington yesterday. The total offering amounted to 19,100 bales, our quota being 4750. Cables lately received from London reporting on the opening of the March series unfortunately showed a weakening in prices, especially in regard to merinos and fine crossbreds. Later advices from London report a brighter tone, with competition more general, good clearances being made out of the catalogues offered. It was fortunate that the hardening tendency showed itself before the Wellington sale took place, ae without doubt confidence was restored, and buyers’ limits were not to any great extent interfered with. Yesterday’s sale was in eveiy way successful, a strong bench of buyers being in attendance, with every section of the trade interested. Continental buyers were operating freely, with Bradford often bidding freely up to the last farthing. French buyers were eager to secure the best line s of lambs’ and free pieces. American buyers were in the market for super-Romneys, but the quantity of this class of wool offering was small, and the quality not up to the last sale’s standard. Before the s ale took place it was generally thought that competition for the fine and medium wools would be less pronounced than at the last sale, with the coarser wools at about a par. To sum up the position briefly, we make very little difference between rates ruling at the present sale compared with the February fixture. Super Romneys might be quoted |d lower, but the quality must be considered, and certainly yesterday’s offering was not up to the previous sale’s standard, the condition and lustre being inferior. Hogget wool was in strong demand, rates being on a par with last sale. Fine carding wools, suitable for the Continental trade, were eagerly competed for, and appreciated by to per pound. Super coarse wools, of the Lincoln type, were eagerly enquired for. and here again prices were better by |d to |d per pound. Super lines of lambs’ wool were principally taken by French operators, with Dominion mills bidding freely. We consider the sale in every way successful, competition for most lines being very animated. Under the hammer wiv sold 90 per cent, of our offerings. Some of our principal sales from this district were as under : G.R.S., 9 bales crossbred 4fd; G. H. The hulk of our off ring consisted of strong crossbred wool, and, as is usual at later sales, a large proportion of baek-eountry clips was shown. We bad an excellent sale; prices, although still low, were higher than we have yet obtained for strong crossbred wool. Compared with last sale, held on Feb- 1 ruary .17, medium and low crossbred Avero fully -}d to Ad per lb higher. I Super and good lambs’ wool sold up ’ to last sale’s rate, medium and infer 1 ior lambs wcor irregular. Pieces and 1 bellies sold well at about same price as previous sale. The sale mav he

considered satisfactory, taking into account cabled report of drop in London. The next sale will be held early in April, and we would advise growers to send in (heir wool as early as possible. LEVIN & CO., LTD. Our catalogue consisted of 4480 bales. Buyers were again present in full force, representing all interests. The bulk of wool offering was no L . equal in quality to previous sales th’s season, as may be expected at this time of the year. There were, however, some good clips of fine and medium crossbred running through th 3 catalogue, which were taken for America at approximately equal prices to the February sale, the most notable sales being:—TAS, Fairfield, at 93'3; Lowlands, 83d; CRB, Tawaha, 8d; Linton, BAd

There was strong and animated competition throughout, particularly from the Bradford and Continental sections, and we sold 86 per cent of our cat: - logue under the hammer. The variation on February sale prices is as follows:—Alerino: static:ary. Halfbred: poorer quality offering, which may be the cause of the apparent easier tendency of Id to 14d. Fine crossbred: Par, any change was in buyers’ favour. Afedium crossbred no change; firm. Coarse and low crossbred: strong, with full |d advance. Good lambs: par. Seedy lambs: easier. Bellies, piece |. locks and crutchings.' no change. In vievv of the easier tendency of I the London sales, now current, the I sale was approached with a feeling ' that there might be some decline in 1 prices to-day; a set-back, however, is 1 not warranted on statistical and trade conditions, and it is pleasing to note that the market here to-day did not follow London, and the record of steady but slow improvement has not been spoiled. The next sale will be held on April and growers are asked to send forward wool promptly for this fixture. The following prices were received for Wairarapa clips:—WL, 7 bales crutchinge 3|d, 3 crossbred sktd 74 crossbred 53d, 50 H 7|d, 8 crossbred 43d: Pukenui over J.H., 13 bales A sfd, 9 A.H. 6£d, 5 crossbred sd. 2 bls 3}d. 1 pc s 2-}d. 2 cts 23d; S.H.R. over Alt.
