FIRE BLIGHT.

OUTBREAK IN GREYTOWN. ACTION DEMANDED. At Wednesday’s meeting of the Grey town Borough Council a deputation was received from the Wairarapa Fruit-Growers Association asking that hawthorn be declared a noxious weed within the Borough. .It was pointed out that hawthorn was a carrier of fire-blight and if the pest was not combatted there was a likelihood of all orchards being wiped out. •Mr Kidd said he had waited upon the Government officials in Wellington and they were emphatic that the disease discovered in Greytown was the fire-blight. The Association advocated the cutting down and burning of all hawthorn hedges and trees. Mr Anker instanced the seriousnes s of fire-blight as reported from other districts. It was only by the eradication of hawthorn that the pest could be kept in check. Mr Loasby pointed out that if the borough declared hawthorn a noxious weed it would be a lead to the Featherston County Council. The deputation then withdrew.

The Mayor said it was patent to all that if the request of the deputation was not acceded to it would mean the wiping out of all orchards in the district.

It was decided to call a special meeting to consider the matter.
