The Marlborough Racing Club’s autumn meeting opens at Blenheim to-morrow, and will be concluded on Saturday. Missland (Elysian—Wairakau), who commenced her winning career at this meeting two years ago, after being cast off by Mr IV. R, Kemball, is top weight in the Hack Welter, and on her performances at Nelson will be hard to beat.. Pitch Dark and Lady Witchet (a Masterton representative) will be a hard pair to dispose of. Matatua has been given a chance to win the cup, so far as weight is concerned, and the Birkenhead gelding may make amends for past failures. Esperance and Printemps must show up well in this race. War Baby has an outside chance. . If well, Paphian should account for the Dash Hack Handicap, though Doueement and Moutoa’s Gift maybe handy at theTfinish. tommy Rot seems to have been thrown into the Summer Handicap. Mountain March, liowever, mav upset calculations. Jackaroo may land the Brooklyn Hack Handicap. Rangi Aroha and In the Pink must run well. The two-year-old filly Epitaph has won £4llO in stakes this season, as a result of being seven times first and once second. She has been off the scene for about two months, but she should earn a lot more money in the autumn, provided she comes back to anything like her best form. She continues to furnish in a marleed degree. Mr A. B. Williams acted wi -ely when he decided on givng Epitaph a rest after her efforts at the A.R.C. Summer Meeting in January. Murchison, who was for 12 years stipendiary steward in New Zealand, h&s accepted the position of stipendiary stewari to the Australian Jockey Club. He considers the Australian plan of placing the stewards in full control on race day far superior; to the New Zealanl system, under which they- possess onlyad’ isory powers. Birkenella is -o be put to ‘lie (limping game for the Kemball stable. Sir Roseberry, who revelled in the mud in the Nelson Cup on Thursday-, and won with ease from American Beauty, was bred by- the veteran owner-trainer. R. Knox, and is bv the
Of the big string of horses now being trained at Opaki, nothing has come on better than Gladful, the Avinner of the last New Zealand Grand National Hurdles. The son of Birkenhead and Gladiola is reported to be sound, and will be ready to race early in the winter jumping season. Eleus, who was kicked at the C.J.C. Summer Meeting, is to be turned out and fired. At a sale of thoroughbred stock from Mr W. H. Gaisford's Oringi stud the highest price was 50 guineas paid by Mr W. H. Dwyer, for the brood n.-are Happy Valley, with, a colt foal at foot by Soiferino. This youngster is a full brother to Bindle. Mr H. lan Simson got a cheap lot in a yearling colt by Elysian—Merry Dale (by Downshire (imp)—Happy Valley ), for 36 guineas. The statement that Gloaming was to bo shipped to Sydney this week was a bit premature. Nothing definite will be decided until after the weights for the Doncaster Handicap and Sydney Cup have been decided. Messrs Holmes, well known in trotting circles throughout the Dominion, intend paying a visit to America about the middle of next month. Aureate, the full sister to Desert Gold, seems to have a liking for the Dannevirke track, for her two wins this season have been recorded there. The two-year-old Mountain Lion is not being allowed to remain idle this season, and has already started in 17 races, with the prospect of contesting a few more before the racing year draws to a close. It is understood that the yearling full brother to Thespian, who realised ICOOgns at auction l<ist week at Wan ganui, was bought on account of the Victorian sportsman, Mr L. K. S. McKinnon. According to the Sydney Referee the ex-New Zealand rider, H Cairns, holds the best winning average amongst Victorian riders this season.
