The greatest production yet to leave the famous studios of Paramount, and a production recognised throughout the world as the screen’s most perfect dud flawless triumph is found in Robert Z. Leonard’s creation “A Gilded Lily” to be screened tonight at the Opera House. “A Gilded Lily” is staged with marvellous splendour and glittering beauty really the wo k of a genius, the like of which has never before been attempted or achieved, is certain to creat a furore and hold its audience spellbound with its magnifience and human heart appeal. Mae Murray reaches the apex of success and adds further laurels to her fame, as the gilded lily, product of Eroadway—Broadway the mystic maze of joy and sorrow—of sunshine and rain—of lights and shadows, that scintilated nightly in one of New York’s most brilliant cabarets. The story centres round this little bit of human tinsel and of the man whbm she loved that was content only with the lure, the glitter and laughter that fed her fame on Broadway, while her very heart cried out for a love and a life that were worthy. It is a of New' York and its gay night life. And of a girl, by night a glittering salamander living on the lights of Broadway, forever playing wj-th fire, trifler of men’s affections, yet behind it all there was a heart that rang true, a heart of gold that belied the ex tcrior. The dances performed by Miss Murray The Spanish, the Bubble and the Balloon are distinctly original and startling, while the costuming is a revelation. The cabaret scenes are the finest yet presented on either stage 61* screen and are gorgeous in the extreme. It is the first production that the Prizma coloured photography has been introduced and considerable expense was incurred in its incorporation. Special music will be rendered by augumented orchestra. The well-known “Diggers” combination, with their versatile and attractive bill of fare, aptly described as “a box of tricks,” will pay a return visit to masterton on March 11 and 13. “The Diggers” have lost none of their originality, and their coterie of four clever comedians, together with gifted vocalists, make them a combination difficult to equal for general excellence. Combined with splendid stage equipment, up-to-date electrical fittings, tastefully selected dressing and effects, tl|e “Diggers” are also possessors of a very capable, orchestra of 10 instruments. The company is rich in talent, particularly vocal, i descending from excerpts from grand opera to the over-popular ballad. Joe i Valli is perhaps the brightest and certainly the most original of the comedians. A funny little Scotsman, with a keen sense for the ridiculous he is , most entertaining- in his sketches and burlesques. Frank Moran, in figure a somewhat lengthy fun-maker, with an infectious smile, also puts in some clever character work, while Fred Mebber renders comic songs, including several of his own composition. As the only “girl” in the combination, Stan Lawson is as chie as ever, with a wonderful wardrobe and a repertoire of new songs. His Oriental dance in the gorgeous Eastern scene that completes the second portion of the programme is particularly pleasing. Gwilym Davies, the possessor of a baritone voice of exceptional range and purity, give§ much pleasure with his soli, particularly his “Dream Boat” number in the temple of Isis. One of the most successful items is a clever Italian characterisation, the work of Frank Perrin. Past experience has demonstrated to. the. “Diggers” the fact that there is always a demand of an entertainment which makes provision for plenty of laughter, music, and vocal effort of a satisfactory standard, with a programme that is clean and wholesome. In this the promoters of this excellent little combination have succeeded both to the satisfaction of “The Diggers ” and their appreciative audiences.
