THE Wairarapa Age MORNING DAILY TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 1922. THE ROYAL WEDDING.
The marriage of Princess Mary, the only daughter of their Majesties the King and Queen, which will take place at Westminster Abbey to-day, will be viewed with, the greatest interest and loyal congratulations all over the Empire. The Royal Family at the present moment holds a position of well deserved popularity in the hearts of the whole nation, and the circumstances surrounding the match appeal particularly to the democratic instincts of the great majority of people in the Dominions. The precedent of marrying a commoner, or someone not of Royal blood, was set a year or two back by Princess Patricia of Con naught. . That was an indication that the King was prepared to depart from the old rule that princesses of the blood must marry princes of the bloc i. The overthrow of the German dynasty made this practically impossible, and the nation, was delighted when it
announced a few weeks ago that Princess Mary would marry a member of an honoured but not very' exalted
noble house. It is announced that Viscount Lascelles receives the Order of the Garter and the Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order, which may be taken as an indication that he will not be created a duke, as was sug
gested in some quarters. It remains to be seen whether Princess Mary will receive the title of *‘ Princess Royal.'' That title is still held by King Edward’s eldest daughter, the Prince-s Louise. She married the Earle of Fife in 1889, and he was created duke on his wedding day. As no dukes were created during the great war it is most unlikely that new creations will bo
inade for such an occasion as thia Princess Mary will have to-day the sirecere congratulations of every loyai Briton, wherever they may be.
