BOXING.
CARPENTIER v. COOK. London, Dec. 29.—The newspapers are paying increased attention to the trainng of Carpentier and Cook. The “Evening News” critic points out that though Carpentier eased up over tlie holidays, Cook worked harder than ever. The fight, he says, will be a terrific affair. It is significant that among the real critics there are more takers than offers of odds against Cook, discounting the suggestion that Dempsey permanently hurt Carpentier. He is of opinion that the Frenchman, though as good as ever, will not have an easy run. “Cook is the fastest heavyweight seen in Britain for years,” he writes. “I believe he is too fast to make the most of his weight, to which is probably due his inability to knock out Curphey or Goddard. Cook now claims that he has developed a punch without sacrificing speed. If this is true Carpentier will have troublous times. The Frenchman has met many sorts of boxers in his career, but never a tougher or gamer opponent than the unassuming Cook.”
