WOOL SALES.
BRISK DEMAND IN LONDON. (Received 5.5 p.m.) London, Dec. B.—At the mixed wool sale there was brisk competition for both merinos and crossbreds, Yorkshire and French buyers taking the former at full late rates. There was a keen demand for medium and low crossbreds, Germany taking some. —(A. and N.Z.) THE “BAWRA” OFFERINGS. Melbourne, Dec. B.—Sir John Higgins has received a statement from Sir Arthur Goldfinch replying to allegations that “Bawra” has withheld wool “from the market in order to raise prices. It was stated that quantities were offered in England, Antwerp, and Australia from September 29 to December 2 in excess of the normal offerings. Referring to prices, he said that crossbred was lower than at any time during the 10 years preceding the war; merino wool was 20 per cent, dearer than the average price before the war; the average price of raw wool was less than one-third the prices ruling 18 months ago.
