j OPENING DAY. I (By Telegraph—Press Association.) INVERCABGiILL. Last Night. The forty-fifth annual show of the, Southland A. and P. Association opened to-day in fine weather. The general entries show an encouraging increase on those of the previous year, and in respect to the quality of the exhibits all round the show is the best ever held by the Association, cattle classes being especially striking. The championships were awarded as follows: Border Leicester Para.—W. Kennedy, of Otautau; ewe, R. J. Anderson. ICauna. English Leicester. —Ram, Thos. Evans, Longbush. Romney Marsh.—Ram, Trustees of the late T. L. Barnhill, Castleroclc; ewe, Murray Bios., of Clyde-vale. Lincoln.—Ram, W. Kennedy, of Otautau. Shropshire Down. —Ram and ewe, Thomas Evans, of Longbush. Southdown.—Ram and ewes, W. Kennedy, of Otautau. Ryeland.—Rain and ewe, Thomas Evans, of Longbush. CATTLE. Shorthorn.—Bull and cow, tho Knapdalc Estate, of Gore. Milking Shorthorn.—Bull, John Bateman, of Bay road; cow,. M. Hishon, of Centre Bush.. Herefords.—Bull and cow, A. S. Holms' Wniroahaka Estate. Polled Angus.—Bull, James Clay, of Mokotua ; cow, Ben Ward, of Fairfas. Ayrshire.—Bull, A. Gait, of West Plains; cow, Robert S. Weir, of Seaward Downs. Jersey or Aldney).—Bull, Rao Bros., of Catlins; cow, Mrs F. E. Helleyer. Anderson's, North East Harbour. Friesiau.—Bull and cow, W. L\ Hunt, of Waikiwi. The Friesiau Derby was won hv A. E. Elsworthv, of Timaru. PIGS. Berkshire.—Sow, Borstal Institute Farm. Inve rear gill., Yorkshire.—Boar. C. P. Grant, of Winton. The Hon. Sir Thomas Mackenzie, G.C.M.G., was the guest of the Association at luncheon to-day, and was also tendered a civic reception. The Hon. W. Nosworthy, Minister of Agriculture, will be present on the People's Day, to-morrow.
