BOROUGH COUNCIL.

FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Masterton Borough Council was held last night, when his Worship the Mayor (Mr. W. H. Jackson) presided. There were also proscnt Councillors E. J. King, T. F. Watson, James Henderson, J. Atkinson, W. Candy, Alex. McLeod, K. K. Burridge, Hugh Perry, and 11. J. 0 'Leary. The report of the sanitary inspector was read and adopted on the motion of the Mayor. The sanitary inspector was granted permission to attend the annual conference of sanitary inspectors at Wellington in January. The report of the park custodian was rend nnd adopted. Tho East Coast. Fishing Company wrote requesting permission to sell fish from a van at the comer of Cburch Street. The applicants were permitted to occupy n stand to be approved by the sergeant of police, until further noiico.' The reports of the poundkeeper and abattoirs manager were read and adopted. A letter was received from the New Zealand Co-operative Distributing Co., Ltd., in reference to their temporary offices in Queen Street, and explaining difficulties preventing their removal. The letter -was "received." The report of the gas manager was read and adopted. The Hotel Midland Company wrote requesting connection with the water service. The request was complied with subject to tho usual conditions. Tho Public Trustee wrote stating thai he could advance the ten per cent, loan at the current rate of interest. Cr. Candy moved that the offer be accepted. This was seconded by Cr. Henderson, but, on being put to the Council, it was defeated. Cr. Burridge then moved that the offer be accepted subject to the rate of interest being within the Council's powers of acceptance. Cr. Burridge's motion was carried unanimously. Messrs Pickering Bros, wrote applying for an extraordinary water supply on behalf of Messrs Coradine and Mclvov. The request was granted, subject to a guarantee being given that tho water would be used for fire lighting purposes only, and that it be installed under the supervision and to the satisfaction of the borough engineer. The Public Health Department wrote stating that in accordance with the new Act, it would in future carry out the inspection of infectious disease work, and public health duties generally. The matter was held over for discussion until the next meeting. The Council resolved to allow W. Stimpson the use of its house in Hope Street, until recently occupied by another employee. Permission was granted to the engineer to attend the annual conference of the New Zealand Society of Civil Engineers at Wellington in January. Mr. H. M. Douglas, solicitor, wrote in reference to tho claim by Mr. D. Donald before the Compensation Court, and detailing certain procedure with reference to the forthcoming hearing of the claim. A sub-committee was set up to assist, the defending counsel. It was also resolved to engage a senior counsel to conduct the case. A letter was received from tho Department of Agriculture stating that stock inspectors' fees had been increased. The letter was "received." The Wairarapa Automobile Association wrote requesting financial assistance from the Council towards the erection of additional fences on the IRimutaka hill. The Council resolved that, while it appreciated the efforts oil the Association, it could not see its way to render financial assistance. Accounts amounting to £Bl SO 19s 2<l were passed for payment.
