LANSDOWNE AMALGAMATION.
A LEGAL OPINION. Messrs Gawlth and Logan, solicitors, have furnished the following advice in regard to the amalgamation of Lamsdowne with the borough of Mastcrton: "The Department have decided to give effect to the recommendations of the Commission, and proclaim t l -e area as recommended, plan of which, we understand, is in your possession. We are of opinion that the Department is entitled to do this under the Act, and, in the meantime, nre delaying, in order to give your Committee, time to consult the petitioners. We think that, if the petitioners requested the Department to take a poll before proclaiming the area, it would do so, but we do hot advise this course. We suggest *that you should call a meeting of the petitioners and place the position before them, and let them take the responsibility of letting"" the matter take its course, or applying for a poll. Subject to what the Masterton Borough Council, or its advisers, may have to" say, we are ot opinion that it be unwise; to prevent the area proclaimed, as recommended, as ?0 much time, wpuld be lost, and pro- . peedings wpuld have to be commenced tie iipvp. If the area is proclaimed, it would, bo necessary.for the Masterton Bqrough Council to apply for a fresh Gpmmissipn to apportion tho cost of the maintenance of the main roads and bridges *" *nc nvcn > this Commission would not, \vp think, consist of tho same porsons as the provious Commission. n
