Mr Duncan McGregor, of Gladstone, was sworn in as a Justice of the Peace at Mastertoit on Saturday morning. Dr. Dawson and family, and Mr G Harold Smith, of Pahiatua, who have been oil a visit to Sydney, returned home on Friday last. Mr Jolm Peat, a pioneer of Otago, died at Palmerston South. He was born in Scotland, and arrived in New Zealand by the ship Plaeida in 185-1. It is announced by cable from London that Sir Robert Monro-Ferguson, bate Governor-General of the Commonwealth, becomes Viscount Novar of Raith. A New York message received this morning states that Signor Caruso, when singing "Elisir d'Amour," broke a blood vessel in the throat. If is feared he may never sing again. Mr C. W. Matten lias resigned the office of treasurer of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers' Association, and Mr J. D, Harper lias been appointed to the position in bis stead. A highly-respected resident of Auckland, Mr Thomas Webb, died at Mount Albert on Wednesday, aged 63 years. Deceased had been in failing health for some time, and suffered from a stroke a couple of years ago. He was a sou of Mr T. Webb, of Aratapu, who arrived in New Zealand in 18(53 by the ship Gertrude, Mr Fred. G. Corson, of MasLerton, received the sad intelligence last evening of the death of his brother, Mr W. J. Carson, from pneumonia. The deceased, who was the eldest son of the Hon. Gilbert Carson, was fortynine years of age, He was secretary of the Wanganui Girls' College. He leaves a widow and three children. Mr F G. Carson leaves Masterton for Wanganui this morning, to be present at the funeral.
