Several smart gallops have been done on the Opaki training track during the last day or two. , Mr. F. Dorset's Hallowmas mare Vitella has been doing good track woi'lc of late, and if she gets a fair passage she will be hard to beat in the Farewell Handicap to-day. Nobleman has been scratched for all engagements for the Masterton meeting. The Masterton Cup has been won on four occasions by an aged horse, four times by a six-year-old, on eight occasions by a five-year-old, and three times by a three-year-old. Ituamahanga and Undecided are the only two horses that have won the Masterton Cup with over 9.0 on their backs. Affectation won the Masterton Cup in record time last year, carrying B.(>. Big Push has been scratched for the Farewell Handicap at the Masterton meeting to-day. Trainer Atvvood lias the California gelding Eorealis in good nick, and lie is expected to run well in the Lansdownc Handicap to-day.

Mr. Murchison will act as Stipendiary Steward at the Masterton races today. Mr. E. A. Mclvenzie's Kilgour (Ivilbroney—Angelina) will have cons'derablc support in the Masterton Cup today. He is in with the light weight of 6.13. Five two-year-olds will compete in the Trial Stakes at Opaki to-day.

Mr. Ulic Shannon will act "as judge at the Masterton races to-day. The first raco at Opaki to-day commences at 12.15 o'clock. Mr. W. R. Kemball will have two horses competing in each race at Opaki to-day,. %vith the exception of the Trial Stakes. A Press Association message from Sydney states that Mr. G. D. Greenwood has sold Dewdrop, by The Welkin—Carissima, to Mr. Percy [ Miller. The price is satisfactory, but is not stated. Warmth, who will start in the Jumpers' Flat at Opaki to-day, is owned and trained by Captain J. Gage Williams, a vice-president of the Tara-tahi-Carterton Racing Club. The Oaptain informed the writer that he has been doing the riding work himself. He trained his own horses in England, ancl won several events. Warmth is his first representative in this country.

The racehorse John Bunny, and William H. Windsor, owner and trainer, were arrested after training work at Ellerslie, and Windsor was charged with having worked the horse while it was suffering - from a sore bao'k. In C'ourL Windsor pleaded guilt}", and his counsel said the sore developed after racing at Avondale, and the horse was entered for a coming steeplechase. Windsor, who was a poor man, could not afford to let the horse go out of form. He only galloped the horse for two or three minutes each morning. Windsor was fined £lO and costs. The New Zealand Trotting Association's Board yesterday decided that a hearty vote of thanks be accorded to 'Mr. George Hunter, M.P., for his great effort to provide additional racing days. The Association trusted that, with the assistance of the overwhelming majority of members of Parliament, as disclosed by divisions on the Gaming Bill No. 2, he would be successful in securing immediate justice for the sports of trotting, country racing, and hunt clubs.

For the second day of the Caul field spring meeting- tlic weather was fine and brigiht, and there was a good attendance. The going was fair, t, Salatis, the top-weight, made most of the running in the Mona Nursery, and won well. The winner was ridden by an Auckland native, Ralph Home. Salatis is owned by his breeder, J. Mills, and is a Cup candidate. Tagalooma finished in great style in the Power Stakes, and just won. Tagalooma is trained by Holt. Ulster Boy led always in the Coogoy Handicap. He is not engaged in the Cup. Results:— Mona Nursery.—Salatis, 8.13, 1; Startc. 8.0, 2; Sonora, 7.9, 3. Twenty starters. Salatis led in the last three furlongs, and won easily by three lengths. Sonora was half a length away, third. Time, 57sec. Herbert Power Stakes —Tangalooma, 8.11 (F. Dempsey), 1; Drumore, 8.8, 2; Doublo Bezique, 7.7, 3. Seven starters. Gringalet. was in front for a mile. Drumore then headed him, and was first into the straight. Tangalooma, who was running fourth in the early stages, came fast, and won by a short, half head. Time, 2min. 2?»Jsec.
