OBITUARY.
MR. ROBERT TENNENT. Widespread regret was occasioned in Greymouth by the news of the deatli of Mr Robert Tennent, which occurred in Wellington on July 25 th. The deceased had attained Ins 80th X£? r i suul had been ailing for some time past. The deceased gentleman was widely known and highly respected by all who knew him. Mr Tennent »vas born in Glasgow, where he was educated, and studied at the School of Mines at the Andersonian Institute. He filled the position of certificated "manager at the Springbank Coal Co.'s collieries, near Glasgow, for eight years, and resigned the position in leaving for New Zealand. Mr Tennent gained his certificate as mine manager by examination at Edinburgh in 1875, and had a widespread expenence before leaving the Old Country. He came to New Zealand in 1883, and took up a position at the Brunner mines, where he remained for thirteen years. He was present at the Brunner disaster, and worked assiduously in the rescue oi the entombed miners, and during the official enquiry gave important evidence which throughout was unshaken, despite the fact that he was severely cross-examined by several lawyers. Ho was considered an unimpeachable authority on mining matters. The deceased leaves three sons, John Tennent, Greymouth (jeweller); David, manager Stratford, Blair and Co.; and Robert, engineer in South Africa. The daughters are Mrs H. Boustridge (Greymouth) and Nurse, Dean (Masterton). There are twentyfour grandchildren and eight greatgrandchildren. The remains of the late Mr Tennent were buried in Grey-1 month.
