THE RONGAHERE MURDER.
The case in which an old man named John Sharp, a farmer, has been sentenced to death for the murder of his daughter, by striking her over the head with a stick, will probably be reviewed by Cabinet in the course of a few clays. Tragic and revolting though the homicidal crime invariably is, there arc circumstances in this case which induce the hope that Cabinet will see its way clear to recommend a mitigation of the penalty. The man is seventy-two years of age, and was subjected to a certain amount of provocation. Moreover, when, in a fit of passion, he struck the girl, he apparently had no idea that he was going to occasion injuries which would result in her death. The accused was very probably suffering from a fit ofdementia when he committed the crime. The Executive will find room for discrimination between this tragedy and others of a cold-blooded character, which have been premedi : tated, and in which a desire for gain has been the incentive.
