The Rev. D. B. Ashcroft, of Tinui, preached at the evening service at St. Matthew's, Masterton, on Easter Sunday. The Trinity College of Music examiner for New Zealand this year will be Mr. C. Schilsky. He is expected to reach Auckland in August. I A Press Association cable message from London announces that Mr. I Charles Allen Wray, once a New Zealand Magistrate, has died at Bourne- | mouth. j Mr. F. De la Cour, who was injured in a trap accident at Martinborough on Good Friday, had a nasty seizure on 1 Sunday night, but is now reported to be progressing fairly satisfactorily. Tho death occurred on Wednesday last at Havelock North of a pioneer settler, Mr. Hugh Campbell. He was burn in Kirkcudbrightshire in 1853, and came to New Zealand when twenty years old, Mr. Norman C. Shepherd, who has been for some time on the literary staff of the Wairarapa Age, has severed his connection with this paper, and intends taking up his residence at Featherston . Mr. G. A. Greenwood, manager of the Bank of New South Wales at Masterton, who has been in Australia for the last five months, reached Auckland by the Makura, and arrived at Masterton yesterday afternoon.

Superintendent Freeman, of the Masterton Fire Brigade, lias been elected senior vice-president of the U.D.F.8.A., and at the conference yesterday was presented with the badge pertaining to that ofScc. The appointments of Mr. E. Page as second Magistrate at Wellington and of Mr. J. Logan Stout, as Magistrate at I'almerston North have been confirmed by the Minister of Justice (Hon. Mr. Coates). At the U.D.F.B.A. banquet in Masterton last night, Mr. INT. C. C. Shepherd, the demonstration secretary, was presented with a suitably engraved tobacco pouch by the Mayor (Mr. W. H. Jackson) in recognition of his untiring efforts in connection with the organisation of the function. A Press Association telegram from Hastings announces the death of Mr. George Edward Lee, the "father of law" in Hawke's Bay. The late Mr. Lee, who was 85 years of age, arrived in Auckland in 1837, and was among the first there to be admitted as barristers under the Law Practitioners Act, 1861. He rendered much service on various local bodies. He is survived by a widow and an adult family. ■ Mr. J. C. Chaytor, one of the most prominent settlers in Marlborough, is dead. He was in his eighty-fourth year. The deceased was identified with many public bodies and private institutions, including the Licensing Committee, the Picton Hospital Board, the Patriotic Association, the Sheepowners' Union, and the Rifle Association. He leaves a grown-up family. One of his sons is General Sir Edward Chaytor, and another Colonel D'Arcy Chaytor.
