Carterton.
(Resident Reporter.) Sinclair and McKenzie (of the Featherston Bowling Club) arrived yesterday by arrangement to play for the Grady Medals. Owing to the indisposition of Mr. Baskiville (the skip for the holders) Hughan and Davis played the visitors, and won by a substantial margin. The New Zealand Farmers' Distributing Company intend erecting saleyards on a three-acre section purchased from Mr. Buckeridge, and almost adjoining the Lincoln Road yards. - The Rev. R. Young has sufficiently recovered from his illness to be out lirfd about. • j
EVENING SPORTS. Tho Caledonian Society held a successful evening sports on the P. and A. grounds last evening, in the presence of a large number of spectators. The secretary (Mr. R. Selby) had the arrangements well in hand. The results were as follows: Maiden race.—W. Smith 1, R. K. Booth 2. 220 yds. handicap.—First heat: E. Selby (16yds.) 1, W. Candy (scr.) 2. Second heat: Randol Booth 1, J. Tinsley 2. Final': E. Selby 1, J. Tinsley 2, Randal Booth 3. Mile bicycle race.—A. Chapman (45 yds.) 1, A. Picken (scr.) 2. Mile walk.—W. Hall 1, P. Bambry 2. C. Tinsley, who secured second place, jvas disqualified, but entered a protest. TARATAHI WATER RACES. A meeting of settlers interested in tho Taratahi water race was held in the Clareville Hall yesterday afternoon, there being twenty-six present. Mr. W. Perry (chairriian of thojCounty Council) occupied tho chai?, and explained the objects of tho meeting. He stated that. a good deal of dissatisfaction had of late, been expressed, and there Jras cause for much of it, at the amount of water that went through , the bottom races. The Council had called the meeting with the express' purpose of giving Jhe ratepayers a chance to form a Board of Managers if they considered better service would accrue to them. Ho detailed tho powers of such managers, and spoke of the splendid work done by the late overseer (Mr. Martin). A general- discussion followed, in which it was stated that while there was more water running through the Catrington races there was less at the Parkvale end. Several speakers stressed the point that more labour should be emplpyed, and that thejL should receive water, no matter at what eost. A resolution was moved that the Boasd of Managers bet set up, but after Mr. T. V. Moore had explained that' there was no,'provision for an elective ,b6dy the motion was withdrawn/ The; County Cl§rk (Mr. Trapp) pointed out that last year the maintenance rate amounted to £7BO, and another £SO had still to be made up. He considered that, with tho additional; labour suggested, tho amount to collect would reach £1250. , It was pointed out that the new overseer would submit a monthly re , port to the Council meeting. A riiotion was subsequently moved that suflicient labour be employed by the Council to keep the races in a proper condition. In answer to a question, the County Clerk, stated that of the £7BO collected the freezing works paid £299. The meeting concluded after a further Informal discussion.
