One the eve of his leaving Hawera for Levin, Mr F. G. Kimbell, manager of the Bank of Australasia, anc 1 formerly of Masterton, was entertained by the citizens of Hawera, and presented with a purse of sovereigns.

Taylor, second son of Mi Godfrey Taylor, of Pahiatua, who foi the past three years has been engaged in the Wellington office staff of the Qnion Steam Shipping Company, has received word of his promotion to the position of assistant purser and joins in that capacity the s.s. Maori this week. A well-known early settler of th" Manegere district, Mr Gavin Wallace, died at Otahuhii on Tuesday, aged 31. Mr Wallace came to the district as a young man nearly sixty year:-: ago, and took up a property of about 200 acres at Ihumata. This he farmad successfully until he retired about eight years ago, leaving it in charge of his son, Mr Hugh Wallace. We regret to hear of .the death, which occurred at his home in Otago yesterday, of Mr H. Clode. The deceased, who was only twenty years of age, was for some time in the employ of the Wellington Education Board, and was headmaster of the school at Te Wharau. He then joined the literary staff of the Wairarapa "Age." The cause of death was hemorrhage of the lungs. Mr H. Miller, the recently-appoint cd headmaster of the Cole street school, > was" in Masterton yesterday. Prior to leaving Berhampore, Mi Miller was entertained and made the recipient of a valuable presetn from the teachers 'and staff of the school. Major-General Sir A. W. Robin, late General Officer Commanding the New Zealand* Defence Forces, will leave for Auckland on Saturday, en route to Samoa, where he will take over the Administration during the temporary absence of Colonel R. W. Tate, the Administrator, in New Zealand.
