STEAMER ON FIRE
AT TIMARU WHARF. I (By Telegraph—Press Association) TIMARU, Wednesday. At 12.15 o'clock a fire was discovered on the starboard side of No. 3 hold in the steamer Westmoreland, lying at No. 3 ivharf and loading frozen meat for Home. The vessel was due to sail to-day. The vessel touched ground on the voyage from the Bluff to Duuedill ill May last, and until last week was lying in Port Chalmers undergoing extensive repairs. The ship loaded 50,000 carcases of meat here. The fire was amongst the flax loaded at Port Chalme*s. By seven, o'clock Jihe outbreak was suppressed, although tho flax was still smouldering. The outbreak will causo tho steamer to bo detained hero till Saturday oi Monday. As far as can be ascertained the steamer has sustained no serious structural damage, and in the meantime meat loading operations are being continued.
