A London cable records the death of Baron Swinton, ex-Master of the Rolls. Messrs J. M. Coradino and C. E. Danlell left Masterton for Wellington yesterday. » Mr. A. Johnston has been appointed caretaker of the Dixon Street baths in Masterton. Mr. David Fleming, a respected resident of Waverley, died last week at the age of eighty-one years. Mr. A, Eddie has been elected president of the Pahiatua Horticultural Society fox; the third year in succession. The death has occurred in London of Mr. J. W. Joynt, M.A., for many years Registrar of the New Zealand University. Mr. George H. Yeale, crier and custodian of the Supreme Court at Wellington, died yesterday morning, after a short illness. The appointment of Mr. G. M. Henderson, M.A., to be Inspector of Na'ivo Schools under the Education Department, is announced. The death occurred in Wellington on Monday evening of Mr. Alexander Paterson, of Masterton. The deceased was sixty-eight years of age. Mr. P. Hunter has been .appointed to represent the Wairarapa A. and P. Society at the annual meeting otthe New Zealand Kennel Club at Wellington on November 28. Mr. J. T. M. Hornsby, M.P., will be present at the meeting with the Hon. Sir Francis Bell, Minister for Education, in the Municipal Buildings, Masterton, at 1.30 o'clock today. " , ' The presentation of an engraved album to Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Coradine (ex-Mayor and Mayoress of Masterton), will take place at the Municipal Hall on Thursday, December 4, at 8 s p.m. Mr. R. J. McGowan, officer in charge of the Valuation Department, Auckland, is retiring on superannuation after 42 years' service. He is a brother of the late Mr. John McGowan, Commissioner of Taxes. In the list of honours just published by the senate of the Otago University, that of Bachelor of Dental Surgery was conferred upon Mr. C. A. Small, Palmers "on North. Mr. Small is a son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Small, of Eketahuna. Cable advice was received from Mel- j bourne on Thursday of the of I George Arpold Stables, surveyor and j drainage engineer. The late Mr. Stables was a pupil at the South District school, Dunedin, where his late father was a teacher for some years, and he graduated in the Dunedin Survey Office, • under the late Mr. W. Arthur and the late Mr. C. W. Adams. The death is reported at Melbourne of Mr. Sail Cleve, who arrived in Australia in the early fifties with 50,000 sovereigns, as the representative of the late Baron Rothschild, lie established the firm of Cleve Bros , which also carried on business in London and Dunedin. He subsequently became well-known as a mercantile broker in Melbourne. He was in his 89th year. A well-known officer of the De> partment of Agriculture, Mr. Robert Rowan, died at Li., residence, Mt. Eden, Auckland, on Sunday, aged 68 years. Deceased* is survived by a widow and eight children. Mr. Rowan has latterly been fields spector, supervisor, and instructor in the Auckland district. Prior to that he was rabbit agent and inspector in the South Island, and inspector of stock for Taranaki district.

Mr. Lars Mattson, J.P., who died at Maur:ceville 4 , f Wesfc on Sunday, was one of the oldest and most respected settlers of the district. s» He was about sixty years of age, and came out> to New' Zealand with the Swedish settlers in the 'seventies. He

was engaged in farming pursuits for many years, and afterwards conducted the .Mauriceville store. IJe also acted as postmaster, and was secretary to the Foresters' Lodge and the Mauriceville Dairy Company. The funeral will leave his late residence for the Mauriceville cemetery at two o'clock this afternoon.
