EVICTION OF TENANTS.
It has been the practice in Masterton and elsewhere in recent months for house speculators to buy up houses, . occupy them for a period, and sell them again at a profit, ruthlessly evicting tenants for the purpose of securing' 4 gain for themselves. The Magistrates have had' no option but to issue an order for eviction when it has been shown that a bona fide purchase has been effected and the purchaser requires the house for his own üße, no matter how long he intends residing therein. With a view to checking the operations of speculators, the War Regulations have been extended, giving the power to a Magistrate to, refuse to make an order of- ejectment if he iB of opinion that undue hardship would be caused to the tenant were such an order made, it is to be hoped that Magistrates will take, the fullest advantage of this regulation, particularly where it is proved that the person concerned in the purchase of a house is a known speculator.
