HIGHER EDUCATION.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —I was surprised to read the Mayor's telegram to Dr. Anderson, Director of Education, re the above, as the outcomo of Friday night's meeting. I have no recollection of the meeting discussing in any way the monetary grant by the Trust Lands Trustees, The two points discussed wore the character and scope of the school, and the site. The meeting agreed that a High School would best serve the interests oT Masterton. and, secondly, that the site adjacent to the fishponds was tho most suitable. Now, the Mayor's tolegram goes one further than the above, and suggests, in addition, that £SOOO as a monetary grant be added. This is a new proposal. No monetary grant was discussed or suggested. Xow, if the suggestion telegraphed by the Mayor "is accepted by the Education Department, where is the Technical School to come in? I think it is known to any who take an interest in local education that a big forward movement is imperative in connection with the Technical School, and that the managers were only waiting for the public to definitely decide as to the character and scope of tho new school. Now that is decided, and decided in such a way that the Technical School is left entirely to local support for development, we have only tho Trust Lands Trust to .depend upon. , Trust cannot, surely, afford to see the Technical School remain stagnant, or go back. And I -should bo surprised to learn that they can advance the High School a sum of £SOOO, and at the same time advance a similar amount' to the Technical School immediately, as will be necessary. I strongly object to such tactics, and in tlie interests of technical education will protest strongly at the next meeting of tho Trust Lands Trustees. The part of Mr. Jackson's telegram referring to "my recent visit to you" is rather illuminating, and throws some light on points that were previously very obscure. —I am, etc., * JAMES M. C&RADINE.
