Mr. J. D. Smith, of Gisborne, and formerly of the Wairarapa, is at present on a visit to Masterton. Ensign and Mrs. Sawyer, of the Masterton Salvation Army, leave for Australia next week on a two months furlough. Mr. L. M. Dixon, of Christchurch, has been appointed organiser for the Wellington district of the Returned Soldiers' Association. A London cable announces the death of Mr. Lionel Rignold, a we.lknown figure on the London and provincial stage. A London cable reports that Mr. Arthur Barker, a well-known artist, has been found dead on the door of his residence. He was sixty-one years of age. M Mr. D. C. Bates, Government Metorologisfc, accompanied by Mrs. Bates, left England on Friday last by the Port Pirie. They are returning via Suez, Mr. W. Douglas Lysnar, who is well-known throughout New Zealand in connee ion with the frozen meat industry, has announced his intention of contesting the Gisborne seat as 'an independent. Messrs F. J. Steele and M. Mackay have been appointed joint secretaries, and Mr. T. F. Watson, treasurer, to the Chatauqua movement in connection with its Masterton season next month. Mr. T. B. Handley, J.P.,1 who* for the last year has been managingeditor of the Woodville Examiner, and was formerly editor of the' Thames Star, has been appointed to a position on 'the editorial staff of the Auckland Star. Three returned soldiers—Rifleman J, J. Perfect, Corporal H. L. Pearse, and Private J. Tyacke—arrived in Masterton by the afternoon train from Auckland yesterday. They were met a» the station by the Mayor and Mayoress and motored to their homes. The death occurred at 4 ' West on Sunday morning of an old and Respected settler in the person of Mr. Lars Marsden, J.P., The deceased,, who was secretary of the Mauriceville Dairy Company, had been ailing for some months. Mr. James W. Milne, manager of the. Tarahaki Farmers' Meat Company, and formerly secretary to the Wellington Farmers' Mea: Company at Masterton, has been appointed general manager-of the iWellington Meat Export Company, in succession to Mr. W. G. Foster. His numerous friends in Masterton will be delighted to hear of Mr. Milne's rapid advancement.
