THE "SQUATTERS."
Sir Walter Buchanan took exception j to a member of the Wairarapa P. and A. Society referring to large land" owners as "squatters." He said the word was used by the Bed Feds-as a term of reproach. It may not be! pleasant for large owners in New Zealand to bo referred to in the same light as tho "squatters" of Australia. Nevertheless, there is nothing to be ashamed of, even in being a "squatter." In Australia these people are rather proud of the designation. But when Sir Walter, in the same breath that he takes exception to the term "squatter," refers to another section of tho community as "Red Feds" what can he expect? The Red Feds, .we believe, rather appreciate* being known by their proper name. Why, then, should those who hold large estates feel themselves reproached when they arc addressed as "squatters." A rose by other name would probably smell as Bweot. But a squatter is a.squatter, even as a Red Fed is a Red Fed, or a "cockatoo" is a "cockatoo."
