BUTCHERS' GRIEVANCES.

The strike of butchers in Auckland will be attended with very serious consequences, so far as the consumers in the northern city are concerned. Of the merits of the dispute the public is not in a position to judge.' It does know, however, that the system of arbitration has failed. And, knowing this, it wants information concerning the intentions of the Legislature in the matter. It has been proved time and again that the Arbitration Court award is binding only on one side. If the employee docs not chooso to accept the finding of tho Court, there is nothing - in the world to compel him\to do so. This is most unsatisfactory. Possibly if a system of Industrial Councils, similar to that proposed in tho Old Country, were introduced, there would be less danger of trado ; dislocation than there is at present. The Conciliation Councils are doing good work, but they are not possessed of sufficient power when dealing with industrial agreements.
