STATE PURCHASE.

A number of well-meaning people arc endeavouring to make it appear that those lk'ho advocate tlie State purchase and control of the liquor traffic, with a view to minimising the evils surrounding that trade and paving the way for the greater reform, if considered necessary, are agents the Licensed Victuallers. Such an assumption is entirely fallacious. There are thousands of men id New Zealand who are conscientiously convinced that the removal of the private interests in the Trade will destroy most of the evils surrounding it It is no argument to assert that these men are advocating the perpetuation of the traffic. They arc advocating the attainable against what they regard as the unattainable, a moderate reform against a violent. In this connection, it -may be mentioned that one of the strongest advocates of State purchase and control in Now Zealand is the Rev. James Milne, a respected Presbyterian minister of the Thames. Nobody would dream of suggesting that this gentleman is an advocate of the Trade, any more than they would suggest tEat Rowntree and Sherwell, the English advocates of State purchase, are agents of the liquor traffic.
