AUSTRALIAN STRIKES
TAX ON THE COMMUNITY. (Australian-N.Z. Cable Association.) (Received Last Night, 11.45 "o'clock.) SYDNEY, February 6. In an official report the UnderSecretary for Labour estimates that the late strike cost the community up to £9,000,000. Altogether 73,& X) employes actively participated, forfeiting £1,700,000 in wages, besides large numbers were indirectly affected. The direct cost to the Government, expedient to counteracting th<> effects of the strike, was £98,000, besides providing £20,0000 for the relief of strike distress. The combined unions' funds provided another. £23,000. and the Lord Mayor's fund £0931 for relief.
