Yorke, labour agent, of Masterton, is at present on his annual vacation. Mr 11. B. Dyer, of Masterton, is at present relieving the manager of the Bank of Australasia at Featherston. From Melbourne comes word of the death, at the ago of 41, of Mr iHarold Lyon, second son of the late Mr M. M. Lyon, of Wellington. Mr A. McCluro, Commissioner of Crown Lands for the Wellington district, will pay an official visit to Masterton to-day. Mr T. G Hirst, manager of tho Bank of Australasia at New Plymouth, has received notice of his transfer to liivorcargill. Messrs Dawson and Ellingham, two members of tho Wellington Land Board, were on an official visit to Masterton yesterday. Captain J. B. Whyte, of Pahiatua, who was identified with, the Army Service Corps, has been promoted to tho rank of major. The death occurred at Akaroa on Sunday of Mrs Peon, mother of Mr Frank, Penn, of tho Otaki "Mail," at the age of 89 years. Tho death occurred at Grey town on Friday night of an old identity of tho Wairarapa, in the person of Mr George Smith, who had been a resident of GiVytown for many years. Mrs Charles Beeby, the oldest resident of Queenstown, recently died, aged 88 years. Her late husband was 95 years of age at the time of his death. Mrs Deeby has resided in Queenstown since 1870. The friends of Mr W. J. Morris, of Pine street, Masterton, will be pleased to learn that Mrs Morris underwent a successful operation in tho public hospital ton Monday evenfng, and js progressing satisfactorily. The death is announced, of another old resident, of New Plymouth, in the person of Mr James O'Neill. As a young man he served in tine 80th Regiment, and after obtaining his discharge he emigrated to Now Zealand. Mr H. Lan Simson, Mayor of Hastings, has received advice that his youngest brother, Lieutenant Herbert Simson, of the Royal Flying Corps, died at sea on January 12th, while returning to New Zealand on sick leave. Messrs J. - M. Ellison, of Puketeraki, and W. Uru ,formerly of Kaiapoi, are the latest candidates announced for the Southern Maori seat. Both were at one time prominent footballers of tho Dominion, and have resided for some time in tho Wairarapa Mr Thpmas Chivcrs, f or many y'ears connected with the Post Office in Christehurch, is dead, aged 76. Deceased was a prominent Baptist, and held the diploma awarded by the British Sunday School IJnion for fifty years' continuous service, Mr A, Q. "Wise, formerly of Masterton, who loft Wellington a few years ago to become general manager of the Melbourne "Herald," has been granted leave of absence in order that ho may spend a holiday in America. Ho is at present in Wellington, accompanied by Mrs Wise, who will also visit the United States. The death occurred at Rotorua last week of Nepia To Rau, ft wellknown Native resident of the West Coast. Deceased, who was about 56 years of age, leaves a wife to mourn his loss. The body was taken first to Levin, and afterwards to Poroutawhao, where 'lie customary tangi took place. Mrs Yarrall of Tauhercnikau, has received word that her oldest son, Lance-Corporal Thomas > J. Liddy, who was previously reported missing, was killed in action oh December I.4th, 1917. Ho left hero with, the IGtli Reinforcement, and at the timo of his death wa* 31 years of age.
