OVERWORKED OFFICIALS.

Complaint is made in the official organ of the officers of the Post and Telegraph Department that the men engaged in the Money Order Offices have been greatly i overworked since the war began. In addition to their ordinary responsibilities, they have been compelled to work"long hours in dealing with war loan certificates. For this extra duty they have not only been refused overtime, but have not received a word of thanks from the. heads of the Department. On the contrary, a reflection has been made on their standard of patriotism in seeking to obtain overtime. Now, patriotism is an excellent thing. T\one recognise this fact more'than the public servants. But patriotism should ■»e voluntary, and should not be forced upon any particular section of the Public Service. Wo have not heard of a great number of brokers foregoing their commissions on the sales of war loan bonds. Nor have the banking institutions worked long hours without recompense. Patriotism is one thing. Fair play is quite another.
