SAFE IN HOLLAND
WAR VETERANSRELEASED FROM GERMANY. • Received January 1, 8 a.m. AMSTERDAM, Dec. 31. A number of British officers and non-commissioned officers, taken prisoners in the Heligoland fight, have arrived from Germany, and also a large party of men taken- in the Battle of Mons. The, latter received a rapturous reception from the Hollanders.' ■ The Allied Ambassadsrs .read the King's message and messages of welcome, voicing the thanks of the Allies for the self-sacrifice of the sadly-thin-ned rearguards, which had enabled the British to reach the Marne. The released men anxiously asked how the war was really going. They said: "Tell the people at Home that their parcels saved us. The food provided by the Germans was very bad." Quarters have been provided for the released prisoners at Scheveningen, near The Hague, and include recreation grounds, clubs, hospitals, and workshops.
